# The keeper

> Markets start, settle and pay out without anyone pressing a button.

Every step in a market's life is an instruction anyone can call. The keeper is our server calling them on time, so a market never waits for a person.

| When | The keeper |
| - | - |
| A market is full, or its join window closed with at least two traders | Starts it and funds every sleeve |
| The join window closed with fewer than two traders | Cancels it and refunds everyone |
| A sleeve's loss reaches 80% of its collateral | Liquidates it and unwinds it |
| A market has ended | Unwinds every sleeve, settles it, resolves its questions and pays out the duels |

It refreshes prices before each step, and runs up to four rounds per market per pass.

## How it's triggered

* A scheduled job calls it every **10 minutes**.
* Any open market page nudges it for that market every 30 seconds, so a market you're watching moves on time.

Because each action is permissionless, anyone can run their own keeper. Liquidations pay a [keeper fee](/concepts/liquidation-and-settlement).
